Don't Let the Bed Bugs Bite
Bed bugs, or Cimex lectularius L., were relatively common only a hundred years ago, before a powerful chemical, DDT, was used to wipe them out. It worked, but it had negative health consequences for humans and pets.
The government eventually outlawed DDT for use as a commercially available insecticide, leaving a vacuum that bed bugs were only too happy to fill once again.

Slowly but surely, bedbugs eventually came crawling back, and by the early 2000s, they'd infested large cities, hotels, airport lounges, movie theater seats, elementary schools, hospital beds, and public buses, just to name a few.
It all just demonstrates how resilient these small, brownish-red insects are to survive and live again to wreak havoc. They now pervade nearly all spaces, from the cleanest, ritziest hotels to a humble rural abode or messy college dormitory.

According to the EPA, bedbugs are the size of an apple seed and have the following characteristics:
* Parasites—Bedbugs are classified as parasites, specifically warm-blood feeders. This means they are specifically feeding off warm-blooded creatures like humans and furry pets.
* Nocturnal—Bed bugs are nocturnal, which means they are most active during the night. However, don't dare fall asleep in the wrong airport lounge or bus seat, because all it takes is a quick snooze for them to grab lunch at your expense.
* Furniture-dwelling—If you think that bedbugs only infest beds, I hate to break this to you: they infest all kinds of furniture within your home, such as cribs, sofas, nightstands, drawers, mattresses, and bed frames. They also love cluttered and messy rooms because it gives them more opportunities to hide.
Basic Facts to Stop Bed Bugs in their Tracks

* A Health Hazard—Bed bugs not only feed off of you and your family, but they also cause multiple bites, which cause irritation and itching. The real danger is when you or one of your family members is allergic to bedbugs. People, including the elderly with anemia, should be careful of being bitten repeatedly or in a massive bedbug attack as well. Groups that are sensitive to bug bites and the trail of welts, pockmarks, and unsightly rashes that ensue should also steer clear.
* Hard to See—They're small and dark, making them tough to detect, but they also live in the shared walls of apartments, condos, or detached duplexes and row housing, making it easy for quick entry and exit between separate units. Some of their obscure but favorite dwelling places include wall faceplates of electric outlets and telephone or Wi-Fi ports.
* Hard To Kill—Bedbugs are resilient creatures. Without the proper tools or cleaning agents, these nasty little creatures can survive for years within your bed. In fact, these pests are able to stay alive for 12 months without feeding.
🩸 Blood Spots: Small, reddish-brown smears on sheets or mattresses, often from crushed bugs.
⚫ Fecal Spots: Tiny, dark spots (like marker dots) on surfaces, which bleed like ink when wiped with a wet cloth.
🪶 Shed Skins: Translucent, empty exoskeletons left behind as bed bugs grow.
🥚 Eggs: Tiny, pearly white, oval-shaped eggs, often found in clusters in crevices.

Eliminate Bedbugs, No Pricey Exterminator Required

Now that you realize the scope of the problem, you no longer need to worry—you can do something about it.
Anyone who's ever battled bed bugs knows how hard it is. But how many people even have money set aside for the high costs of professional bed bug treatment? Many exterminator jobs for bed bug infestations run from $1,000 to $5,000 for an apartment, condo, or small or medium-sized house.
But before you pull out your wallet and get your credit card to hand over to Terminix or Orkin or, worse, sign up for auto-billing and indefinite monthly treatments, you should know about the affordable insect-killing remedy that works without chemicals and won't break the bank.
